AI search for gyms and fitness studios: what owners need to know

AI search for gyms means people asking ChatGPT or Gemini where to train, then joining one of the gyms named. In our New York scan, the same premium chains appeared in both assistants' top tens, and gyms' own websites carried 49% of the citations.
Choosing a gym is a considered decision people research before committing, and that research increasingly starts by asking an assistant which gyms nearby are worth joining. Instead of comparing a dozen websites, prospective members ask for a shortlist and get one.
More prospective members now ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude which gym to join before they book a tour, and how those assistants decide which gyms to name decides whether that membership is yours. It is worth knowing why some gyms stay invisible to AI and checking where you stand now, not in January.
What members ask AI when they want to train
Gym questions mix location, format and fit, classes, beginners, hours, atmosphere, and the answer shapes who walks in for a look around. These are the questions that feed your sales funnel:

What AI actually says about gyms in New York: our scan
On 8 October 2026 we put six questions to ChatGPT and six to Gemini about gyms in New York, such as "Which gym in New York is best for helping me lose weight and build a sustainable workout routine?" and "What are the top 5 gyms in New York City?". We noted every gym and every source in the twelve answers. It is a one-day reading of one city, useful for the pattern, not as a ranking.
ChatGPT named 28 gyms and Gemini 34, and the two lists overlapped at the top: four brands appeared in both top tens, all multi-site premium chains. One chain's clubs were named in 7 of the 12 answers, and no independent gym was among the brands both assistants named.
Gyms' own websites took 49% of the citations, and the leading chain's site alone was cited in 5 of ChatGPT's 6 answers. The rest came from fitness blogs, a supplement brand's blog, an online personal-training site and Reddit, almost all on Gemini. For an independent gym, the takeaway is that the chains win on documentation: their sites state classes, equipment, coaching and locations in detail. A site that says just as clearly what you offer and who you suit, plus mentions in the fitness blogs and threads that Gemini reads, is how an independent gets named next to them.

How AI decides which gyms and fitness studios to recommend
Assistants recommend gyms from gyms' own websites, fitness blogs and forum threads, sources that capture what a gym offers and who it suits. A gym whose classes, facilities and atmosphere are clearly represented and well reviewed is easy to match to a specific ask, because the assistant can see who it suits.
