AI search for electricians means customers asking ChatGPT or Gemini who to call, then ringing one of the firms named. In our New York scan, 77% of the citations behind those names went to home-services platforms and city government pages.
When something electrical goes wrong, people want a trustworthy name fast, and they increasingly ask an assistant to give them one rather than working through a page of listings. For an electrician, being that name is the difference between winning the job and never hearing the phone ring.
More customers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude for a trustworthy electrician before they ask a neighbour, and the way those assistants choose who to name decides whether the job is yours. It helps to understand why some tradespeople stay invisible to AI and to check where you stand before the next emergency call goes elsewhere.
What customers ask AI when something needs fixing
Electrical questions are urgent, safety-conscious and trust-driven. The person asking usually needs someone soon and wants reassurance the person is competent and certified. These are the moments that turn into booked jobs:

- “Trusted electrician for a rewiring in the area”
- “Electrician to install an EV charger nearby”
- “Certified electrician near me for a fuse box replacement”
- “Reliable electrician for a fault close by”
What AI actually says about electricians in New York: our scan
On 8 October 2026 we asked ChatGPT and Gemini six questions each that a New Yorker with an electrical problem might type, from "Who should I call in New York to fix flickering lights and repeated circuit breaker trips?" to "Which electricians in New York specialize in installing EV chargers at home?". The twelve answers gave us every firm named and every source behind it, a snapshot of one city rather than a ranking.
ChatGPT named 26 firms and Gemini 18. The most-named firm appeared in 6 of the 12 answers, and the two assistants' top tens shared four firms, more than in most trades we scan. In this scan, the same few well-documented firms kept coming back.
The sources explain why. Over half of the citations went to home-services platforms: ConsumerAffairs on both assistants, then HomeAdvisor, HomeGuide, Thumbtack and Angi on Gemini. Almost a quarter went to official pages, all of them on ChatGPT: New York City's own site and its 311 service, cited in 4 and 3 of ChatGPT's 6 answers, plus the local utility. Firms' own websites made up the last quarter. For an electrician the takeaway is clear: complete, reviewed profiles on the platforms, a license customers can check, and a site that names the jobs you do (EV chargers, rewiring, breaker faults) are what the assistants read.
Our October 2026 Gemini study took electricians to nine cities, New York included, with eight questions asked three times each. Outside France, Gemini cited ConsumerAffairs in 37% of answers and Angi in 23%, named no electrician in 15%, and 32% of the electricians it named held their place across all three asks, one of the steadiest results of any trade. In the French cities that fell to 10%.

How AI decides which electricians to recommend
For trades like yours, assistants draw on trade directories, vetting and review platforms, and clear service listings, the sources that signal you are real, qualified and well regarded. A visible, consistently reviewed presence across those tells an assistant it is safe to put your name forward to someone who needs work done in their home.
