ChatGPT check

ChatGPT visibility checker

Does ChatGPT name your business when a customer asks it for one? Peekl puts your customers’ questions to ChatGPT with web search on, three times each, and shows who it names, who it names instead and which websites it read. Start with the free check, then the audit covers ChatGPT.

The free check runs on Gemini. ChatGPT is in the $99 audit, no subscription.

Why ChatGPT

Why check ChatGPT on its own

ChatGPT is the assistant most customers name first, and the one most likely to leave a local business out. In our scans of 378 ChatGPT answers about seven trades in nine cities, it named 2.2 businesses per answer, fewer than Gemini’s 3.0. Fewer names means a harder door.

It also chooses differently. Its favourite business in a city appeared in 40% of that city’s answers, so it spreads its picks, and it backed them with a web few owners think about: 27% of its citations went to official and professional bodies, health authorities, licensing boards, trade registers. Gemini gave those almost nothing. A business can be well known to Gemini and unknown to ChatGPT for the same question in the same town. In one Peekl audit, an established London clinic was named 13 times by Claude and 6 times by Gemini, and by ChatGPT not once in 45 answers.

It is also the assistant most people have actually tried. Pew Research Center found that 34% of US adults had used ChatGPT by early 2025, about double the share in 2023, and 58% of those aged 18 to 29. The customers asking it for a plumber or a dentist are no longer early adopters.

What you get

What the ChatGPT visibility check reports

Forty-five ChatGPT answers inside the audit, read one by one, and turned into four things you can act on.

How often ChatGPT names you

Fifteen customer questions, each put to ChatGPT three times. You see the count of answers that named you, and the ones that did not.

Who ChatGPT recommends instead

Every business ChatGPT reached for across the 45 answers, ranked by how often, so you know exactly who is taking the call.

Which websites ChatGPT read

ChatGPT cites the pages it used when it searches. The audit records every one and shows which named you and which named a competitor.

The ranked plan

Up to twelve fixes in order of impact, each drawn from a gap ChatGPT exposed: a register you are not on, a directory that lists the competitor, a page that does not answer the question.

Our scan data

What ChatGPT reads before it recommends a local business

Data: 378 ChatGPT answers, 926 citations, seven trades, nine cities, collected and read by the Peekl team. Last reviewed: September 18, 2026.

ChatGPT cites fewer pages than Gemini, 2.4 per answer against 3.8, and it trusts a different kind of page. The websites it cited in the most separate checks were a French business directory and the French health-insurance register, then the American Academy of Dermatology, the French health authority, Doctolib, Fresha, a review platform and Zillow. Registers and professional bodies sit where Gemini has Reddit and Facebook.

That has a practical consequence. If your trade has an official register, a licensing board or a professional association with a public directory, ChatGPT is the assistant most likely to read it, and a missing or incomplete entry there is a ChatGPT-specific gap. Booking platforms and review sites still matter, and ChatGPT and Gemini shared at least one top source three times out of four, but the weighting is not the same, and the shortlists are not either.

Bar chart of the websites ChatGPT cited in the most separate Peekl checks, out of 63: pagesjaunes.fr 8, ameli.fr 8, aad.org 7, has-sante.fr 5, doctolib.fr 5, fresha.com 5, reviews.birdeye.com 5, zillow.com 5.
The websites ChatGPT cited in the most separate checks. Two of the top four are official registers, a pattern Gemini does not share.

For your ChatGPT presence the order of work follows from this: the official or professional directory for your trade first, then the booking platform and review sites that list your competitors, then a website page that answers the customer’s question in plain words. ChatGPT tends to quote pages that state a fact and support it in one place; the by-hand guide shows how to see this for yourself before you run anything.

How to track the sources AI cites
Check or track

ChatGPT rank tracker, or a ChatGPT visibility check?

A ChatGPT rank tracker, also sold as a ChatGPT visibility tracker or ChatGPT brand monitoring, is a subscription tool that sends a fixed list of prompts to ChatGPT on a schedule and charts how often a brand is mentioned or cited over time. It is built for marketing teams with many prompts and several assistants to watch. Prices run from about $29 a month to several hundred.

An owner with one location rarely needs a line on a chart. ChatGPT’s answer is rebuilt on every run, so the useful reading is the pattern across a set of questions, repeated three times, and what changed after you fixed something. That is what the $99 audit is built to show, on ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude at once, with monthly re-checks at $39 as an option for owners who want the trend without a dashboard to learn or a seat to pay for. Compare the ChatGPT trackers if you manage several brands or want daily runs.

ChatGPT visibility checker: questions

Is there a free ChatGPT visibility checker?
Not from us, and we would rather say so plainly. The free Peekl check runs on Gemini. ChatGPT is checked in the $99 audit, three times per question, because a single ChatGPT answer is too variable to read anything into. What the free check covers
How does the check query ChatGPT?
Through OpenAI’s API with web search on, so ChatGPT looks up businesses the way it does in the app and cites the pages it read. Wording differs from run to run, which is why each question runs three times and the result is a count, not a screenshot. How ChatGPT search works, from OpenAI
Can I check how ChatGPT ranks my business?
ChatGPT does not keep a ranking. It writes a fresh shortlist every time, so the honest measure is how often you appear across many answers and in what position when you do. The audit reports both, plus who appeared when you did not. The metrics explained
Which websites does ChatGPT use to recommend local businesses?
In our scans, official registers and professional bodies more than any other assistant, then directories, booking platforms and review sites. The exact set depends on your trade and country, and the audit lists the ones behind your own answers. The 756-answer source study
How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my business?
Be present, complete and consistent on the sources it reads for your trade: the official directory, the booking platform, the review sites, plus a page on your site that answers the question plainly. Then check again a few weeks later. Nobody can guarantee ChatGPT a place on its list, so treat any such promise as a warning sign. How to improve your AI visibility
Can I track my ChatGPT visibility over time?
Yes. Monthly re-checks are an optional $39 add-on once you have run the audit. Each one repeats the same fifteen questions, three times, and reports whether the number of ChatGPT answers naming you went up or down. See monthly tracking
Does the check cover ChatGPT search and the regular ChatGPT?
It queries ChatGPT with web search on, which is how it answers a local recommendation question in the app. An answer from memory, without search, cites nothing and is not a useful test of local visibility.
Is Peekl a ChatGPT tracker for agencies?
It suits an agency that runs checks for local clients, and the partner programme exists for that use. A national brand that wants hundreds of prompts refreshed daily is better served by one of the subscription trackers we compare. The partner programme
