How to check if ChatGPT recommends your business
Part of the complete guide to AI searchability.
To check if ChatGPT recommends your business, open ChatGPT and ask the questions your customers ask, like the best option in your town for what you do, then see if your name comes up. You can do this by hand, or run a free check that asks several assistants for you and counts how often you appear.
- You can check by hand: ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude the questions your customers ask, and see whether you get named.
- One check tells you little. AI answers change every time you ask, so the honest way is to repeat the questions across several assistants.
- A free Peekl check does this for you: it runs your questions across ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude many times and counts how often you appear versus competitors.
- No tool can force an assistant to recommend you, and no honest one promises a number-one spot. What you get is an accurate snapshot you can act on.
How to check if ChatGPT recommends your business, by hand
The simplest way to check is to become your own customer for five minutes. Open ChatGPT and ask it the questions people ask when they are ready to buy, using your real trade and town. Read the answer and look for your name.
Ask a few different questions, not just one, because each way of phrasing it pulls a slightly different answer. The same method works to find out if Gemini, Perplexity or Claude recommends your business: ask each one the same questions and note who gets named.
- “Best [your trade] in [your town]”
- “Who should I use for [the job you do] near [your area]?”
- “Recommend a reliable [your trade] in [your town]”
- “Who are the top-rated [your trade] in [your town]?”
Why checking by hand is harder than it looks
Doing it by hand is honest and free, but it has real limits, and those limits are why a one-off look can mislead you.
AI answers change every time you ask, so a single check is closer to a coin flip than a measurement. To trust the result you would need to ask each question several times, on each assistant, and keep score. That is a lot of copying and pasting for one afternoon.
By hand you also cannot see where the answers come from. Assistants build their picks from directories, review sites and best-of lists, and knowing which source named your competitor is what tells you where to act. A manual check hides all of that, and it will not show you how often rivals appear next to you.
The faster way: a free check across ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude
A free Peekl check runs the questions your customers ask across ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, several times each, and counts how often you are named versus the businesses recommended instead. It also traces those recommendations back to the sources behind them, so you can see why a competitor keeps getting picked.
It is a snapshot, not a verdict. AI answers change, and no tool controls what an assistant says, so we report how often you appear rather than a single lucky or unlucky result. What you get is an honest read you can act on in a couple of minutes, without pasting anything by hand.
To show what this looks like, we ran a real check on an established physiotherapy clinic in London. Across ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude it was named in only 19 of 135 answers, and ChatGPT never named it once, while other clinics were recommended in its place. The owner had no way of knowing that until they measured it.
What to do if AI doesn't recommend you
Being left out is common, and it is fixable. Assistants name businesses they can verify in more than one trusted place, so the work is to become one of those names: complete your listings, earn recent genuine reviews, and make your website easy to quote.
