AI search for veterinary practices: what owners need to know

AI search for vets means pet owners asking ChatGPT or Gemini where to take their animal. In our New York scan, one animal hospital was named in 10 of 12 answers, and practices' own websites made up 78% of the citations.

Pet owners choose a vet with their heart as much as their head, and when something is wrong they want a trusted name immediately. More of them now ask an assistant to point them to one, especially owners who are new to an area or facing a worry for the first time.

More pet owners now ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude for a good vet before they ask around, and how those assistants decide which practices to name decides whether that anxious owner arrives at your door. It is worth understanding why some practices stay invisible to AI and checking where you stand now rather than later.

What pet owners ask AI when their animal needs care

Veterinary questions are emotional, sometimes urgent, and often specific to a species or need. The answer decides where a worried owner turns, and where they turn once often becomes where they stay:

What AI actually says about vets in New York: our scan

On 8 October 2026 we asked ChatGPT and Gemini six questions each that a pet owner in New York might type, from "Who should I see in New York if my dog has been vomiting and won't eat?" to "Which vets in New York specialize in dental care for pets?". We wrote down each practice and each source in the twelve answers, enough to show a pattern in one city, not to rank vets.

Of the 11 trades in this New York round, vets were the most concentrated. One large non-profit animal hospital was named in 10 of the 12 answers, 5 on each assistant. ChatGPT named only 14 practices in total, the fewest of the eleven trades we scanned in New York, and Gemini 26; their top tens shared four, including two emergency and specialty hospitals. A general practice competes with institutions the assistants already trust for anything urgent.

Practices' own websites made up 78% of the citations, and the hospital's own site was cited in 7 answers. The rest came from the ASPCA, the American Animal Hospital Association, which accredits practices, a city lifestyle magazine and one Reddit thread. For a practice owner the takeaway is that your site does the work here: a clear page for each service you offer (dental care, emergencies, the species you treat), your accreditation stated, and the same practice details everywhere.

How AI decides which veterinary practices to recommend

Assistants recommend vets mostly from practices' own websites, backed by animal-welfare and accreditation bodies such as the ASPCA and the American Animal Hospital Association, sources that capture trust, services and standards of care. A practice clearly present and warmly reviewed across those, with its services and any specialisms plain, is easy for an assistant to recommend to an anxious owner.
