AI visibility / Plumbers

Does ChatGPT recommend plumbers?

When customers ask ChatGPT to recommend a plumber, it names specific businesses. We asked the questions customers really use, city by city, and recorded which plumbers it names and where it gets its answers. Each city below has its own page with the full list, and the AI visibility directory covers every trade and city we scan.

Across 6 cities and 83 answers, the assistants named 289 different plumbers, counted city by city, about 3.5 names per answer. That makes this a fragmented market: on average the most-named business appears in only 30% of a city's answers, so no single name dominates and the short list changes from question to question. The spread between cities is wide: in Chicago the leader was named in 43% of answers, in London in 14%. A fragmented market is the easiest to enter and the hardest to hold: with no fixed leader, whichever plumbers are best represented on the sources below get named that week.

ChatGPT and Gemini agreed on at least one plumber in 4 of 6 cities and handed out entirely different names in the other 2. For plumbers the assistants leaned first on individual business websites and then booking platforms and marketplaces, with rotorooter.com and checkatrade.com cited most. One business site, rotorooter.com, was cited 27 times on its own, the kind of exception that happens when a chain has many locations or a page answers one question very well. Before spending anything else, a plumber who wants to be named should be complete and consistent on those two.

Plumbing is the most brand-driven trade in our data. One national franchise was cited more than any other source, and marketplaces that vet tradespeople come next, with city licensing pages behind them. The assistants treat vetting as a proxy for trust, so an independent plumber's shortest route into the answer is a complete, licensed profile on the marketplaces the assistants read, not a new website.

Common questions about plumbers and AI

How many plumbers does AI name in a typical answer?
Across 83 answers in 6 cities, the assistants named 289 different plumbers, roughly 3.5 per answer. Each answer is a short list, and the most-named business in a city appeared in 30% of that city's answers on average.
Do ChatGPT and Gemini recommend the same plumbers?
Not reliably. In the 6 cities where both ran, they named at least one plumber in common in 4. Even for plumbers, where they overlap more than most, one assistant is still only part of the picture.
Which websites does AI use to recommend plumbers?
Mostly rotorooter.com and checkatrade.com, followed by consumeraffairs.com, in that order across the 6 cities. A plumber that is listed, complete and well reviewed on those is the one the assistants can name.

How plumbers get recommended by AI

AI assistants recommend the plumbers they can find and trust. For plumbers that means being listed and well reviewed on rotorooter.com and checkatrade.com before anything else, and having pages that state plainly what you do and who you help. A plumber an assistant cannot find is one it cannot name (why your business might be invisible to AI); one it finds but ranks behind others is a different problem, covered in why AI recommends your competitors instead of you. For the owner's side of this trade, read AI search for plumbers. Close trades have their own guides: AI search for electricians and AI search for cleaning services.
