Does ChatGPT recommend hair salons?
When clients ask ChatGPT to recommend a hair salon, it names specific businesses. We asked the questions clients really use, city by city, and recorded which hair salons it names and where it gets its answers. Each city below has its own page with the full list, and the AI visibility directory covers every trade and city we scan.

Across 6 cities and 82 answers, the assistants named 361 different hair salons, counted city by city, about 4.4 names per answer. That makes this a fragmented market: on average the most-named business appears in only 31% of a city's answers, so no single name dominates and the short list changes from question to question. The spread between cities is wide: in Miami the leader was named in 43% of answers, in New York in 21%. A fragmented market is the easiest to enter and the hardest to hold: with no fixed leader, whichever hair salons are best represented on the sources below get named that week.
ChatGPT and Gemini agreed on at least one hair salon in 3 of 6 cities and handed out entirely different names in the other 3. For hair salons the assistants leaned first on booking platforms and marketplaces and then media and community sites, with fresha.com and booksy.com cited most. No individual hair salon website made the top sources: the assistants built these answers entirely from third parties. Before spending anything else, a hair salon who wants to be named should be complete and consistent on those two.
Hair salons are the one trade where media outrank directories. City magazines' best-of lists and lifestyle titles feed the answers, with a booking platform behind them, which is why the recommended names skew toward salons that have been written about. It is also the most fragmented trade we scan: no salon holds a city, and a fresh feature in a local guide can change the short list within weeks.

How hair salons get recommended by AI
AI assistants recommend the hair salons they can find and trust. For hair salons that means being listed and well reviewed on fresha.com and booksy.com before anything else, and having pages that state plainly what you do and who you help. A hair salon an assistant cannot find is one it cannot name (why your business might be invisible to AI); one it finds but ranks behind others is a different problem, covered in why AI recommends your competitors instead of you. For the owner's side of this trade, read AI search for hair salons. Close trades have their own guides: AI search for barbers.
