Does Reddit help AI recommend your local business? What we measured

By the Peekl team · Last reviewed: October 15, 2026

Part of our series on Understanding AI search. The reference guide is the complete guide to AI searchability.

Sometimes, and mostly on Gemini in English-speaking cities. In our October 2026 study, Gemini cited Reddit in 14% of its answers in London, Dubai and four US cities, and in 2% of its answers in Paris, Lyon and Marseille. ChatGPT did not have Reddit among its ten most-cited sources in any of our 63 September scans. Price questions pulled Reddit in most often.

So Reddit is worth watching if you run a restaurant or a salon in an English-speaking city, and rarely the first thing to work on anywhere else. Below are the numbers, the subreddits Gemini cited, and what Reddit's own rules allow a business to do.

Method and limits: one model (Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite with Google Search), one day in October 2026, 8 questions per trade and city, each asked 3 times; the repeats are not independent, so treat gaps of a few points as noise. The ChatGPT comparison uses our September scans (GPT-4o with web search, 7 trades, no restaurants, 6 questions per scan, each asked once). The Gemini app and Google's AI Mode may behave differently.

Key takeaways
  • Gemini cited Reddit in 14% of its local answers in English-speaking cities, 30% for restaurants and 21% for hair salons, and in 2% of its answers in France.
  • Value-for-money questions sent Gemini to Reddit most: 30% of those answers cited it, against 4% for questions about a place near a landmark.
  • The threads it cited were mostly residents asking for affordable picks in city subreddits such as r/AskChicago and r/AskLosAngeles.
  • ChatGPT had Reddit among its top sources in none of our 63 September scans; Gemini did in 9.
  • Reddit's rules require authentic participation and ban vote manipulation; its free Reddit Pro tools let a business follow mentions of its name.

How often does AI cite Reddit for local businesses?

Far more on Gemini than on ChatGPT, and far more in our English-language questions than in our French ones; language, country and local sites changed together, so we cannot separate them. In our October 2026 Gemini study, Reddit appeared among the cited sources of 178 of 1,285 answers in the English-speaking cities. In the French cities it was 12 of 641. In our September scans, Reddit made Gemini's ten most-cited sources in 9 of 63 trade-and-city scans, and ChatGPT's in none.

The trade matters as much as the language. Restaurants and hair salons, where people trade tips about places they have tried, are where Reddit shows up; aesthetic clinics and electricians barely see it.

Which customer questions send Gemini to Reddit?

Questions about price. In the English-speaking cities, 30% of Gemini's answers to value-for-money questions, such as an affordable dentist or a cheap haircut, cited Reddit, twice the rate of a top-five question and seven times the rate of a question about a place near a landmark. Questions about who is most trusted came second, at 19%.

That fits what is on Reddit: residents asking each other where to go on a budget and answering from experience, which is what an assistant looks for when no business page states a price. The city mattered less than the question: 9% of answers cited Reddit in London, 12% in Dubai and Miami, 15% in Los Angeles, 17% in Chicago and 18% in New York.

Bar chart of the share of Gemini answers citing reddit.com by type of customer question in English-speaking cities: value for money 30%, most trusted 19%, top-5 shortlist 15%, best in an area 13%, a specialty 13%, a specific problem 12%, same-day urgency 6%, near a landmark 4%.

Which subreddits does Gemini cite for local recommendations?

Mostly city question boards and city food boards. Our study only kept the domain of each source, so on 15 October 2026 we asked Gemini 162 of the same questions again, for nine trades in the six English-speaking cities, and resolved every Reddit link to its subreddit. 29 answers (18%) cited Reddit, more than the 14% of the full study because these were direct, top-five and price questions only, and 16 of the 29 were price questions. Counting answers, r/AskChicago appeared in 5, r/ChicagoFood in 3 and r/AskLosAngeles in 2; in all, the answers linked to 42 threads in 19 subreddits. Asked where to find an affordable hair salon in Chicago that still does good work, Gemini cited seven separate r/AskChicago threads in a single answer. Smaller niche communities came next, such as a skincare board for over-45s and a women's running board, each cited for one thread.

The threads read like the questions themselves: residents asking for affordable dentists in Chicago, budget haircuts in Los Angeles or a physiotherapist without insurance in New York, with other residents naming the places they use. Three of the cited subreddits looked like promotional boards, such as one listing "top 10 dental clinics in London". We did not test whether Gemini treats these boards differently from genuine discussions. Reddit's own rules, covered next, are the more immediate limit on what a business can do there.

Why do Gemini and ChatGPT treat Reddit differently?

Both companies have a data deal with Reddit, so the deals alone do not explain the gap. In February 2024 Google gained access to Reddit's Data API to display Reddit content and train on it; in May 2024 Reddit announced that OpenAI would bring Reddit content to ChatGPT through the same API. We found no announced renewal or change on either company's site (checked 15 October 2026), and Google notes the deal does not change its use of publicly crawlable content, so Gemini can reach Reddit through Google Search either way.

What we can see is behaviour. Gemini with Google Search builds each answer from the pages Google's search returns for it, and Reddit threads were among them for price questions in particular. ChatGPT's local answers in our September scans opened 2.4 pages on average and leaned on registers, directories and review sites. Whatever the reason, a Reddit mention is more likely to reach a customer through Gemini than through ChatGPT today.

Should you post on Reddit about your business?

Only as yourself, and not to advertise. Reddit's rules ask people to participate authentically in communities they care about and ban content manipulation, and its help centre bans vote manipulation, including coordinated voting by an organised group. Its spam guidance tells anyone whose posts are mainly links to their own business to watch how often they post or consider advertising. Many city subreddits add their own bans on self-promotion, so read a community's rules before posting. Reddit also polices votes: in July 2026 it said it was revoking nearly 2 million fake votes a day.

  • Follow what is said about you. Reddit Pro is free for eligible businesses in English-speaking countries, and its Trends tool tracks where your name and your trade are discussed.
  • Reply as the owner, openly, when a thread is about you or a problem you solve: say who you are, answer the question, and leave the recommending to others.
  • Host an AMA on your own Reddit Pro profile, which Reddit allows; inside a subreddit, ask the moderators first.
  • Fix what threads complain about. A thread that says your prices are unclear is telling you which page to write.
  • Do not post fake recommendations, buy upvotes or pay people to mention you without disclosure. Reddit asks businesses not to offer incentives for positive comments and provides a brand affiliate tag for paid posts.

What matters more than Reddit for your trade?

For most trades, the platform your customers book through. Even where Reddit appeared most, it was one source among several. Hair salons were cited from Fresha and Booksy about as often as from Reddit. In France Gemini barely used Reddit at all, relying on Treatwell, Planity, Doctolib and PagesJaunes instead. The exception is restaurants in English-speaking cities, where Reddit was Gemini's most-cited site, just ahead of Time Out.

The quickest step that does not depend on Reddit is a page that states your prices, since price questions are the ones that send Gemini to Reddit in the first place. Our GEO guide for a local business puts the rest in order, and the Gemini study has the sites cited for every trade and city.

Common questions

Does Reddit help a business get recommended in France?
Rarely. Gemini cited Reddit in 2% of its answers in Paris, Lyon and Marseille in our study, against 14% in English-speaking cities. French answers leaned on Doctolib, PagesJaunes, Treatwell, Planity and trade platforms instead.
Can I pay someone to post about my business on Reddit?
We would not. Reddit's rules ban content and vote manipulation, Reddit asks businesses not to reward users for positive comments, paid posts must carry its brand affiliate tag, and many city subreddits ban promotion outright.
Does Reddit help ChatGPT recommend my business?
Not in our data. OpenAI has had access to Reddit's data since its May 2024 partnership, but in our September 2026 scans of seven trades in nine cities Reddit was never among ChatGPT's ten most-cited sources for local questions. Its answers leaned on registers, directories and review sites.
How do I find Reddit threads that mention my business?
Search Reddit for your business name and for your trade plus your city, and sort by new. Reddit Pro's free Trends tool can follow those keywords for you and shows which communities discuss them. Note the threads that ask about price, since those are the ones Gemini cites most.

Reading about AI search is useful; knowing your own place in it is what helps. A free Peekl check asks ChatGPT or Gemini, your pick, the questions your customers ask and shows whether it recommends you today, who it names instead, and how often. The full audit runs the same questions on all three assistants, Claude included.
